Reddy is steady as Gold Miners blank Wildcats

Kohl Reddy handled all 21 shots he faced to register his second shutout of the season and the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners went on to collect a trio of third period tallies as they went on to defeat the Elliot Lake Wildcats 3-0 in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League inter-divisional match-up Saturday at Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

A tightly-contested first period saw neither connect offensively as the two teams hit the intermission scoreless.

It was much the same in the second stanza as both Reddy and Elliot Lake starter Jonathan Lemaire kept opposing shooters at bay through 40 minutes.

Kirkland Lake would finally break the deadlock, 4:11 into the third as Connor Van Weelie converted on a man advantage opportunity and collected the eventual game-winner.

Coming right back, the Gold Miners scored again less than a minute later on a Camille Marcoux effort.

The hosts then finished off the home ice triumph in the late going when AJ Campbell put one into an empty net to round out the evening’s scoring.

While Reddy picked up the win, Lemaire was busy in defeat as he made 47 saves on the night to keep his side in it throughout the contest.

Powassan picks up home win over Elliot Lake

A five-goal second period was more than enough as the Powassan Voodoos went on to blank the Elliot Lake Wildcats 7-0 Friday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League match-up at the Powassan Sportsplex.

Parker Bowman put the Voodoos in flight nearly three and a half minutes into the contest as he notched his team-leading 26th tally of the season.

The home side then went up by a pair at 7:25 of the first frame as Seiji Martone set-up Gregory Trudeau-Paquet for his 18th of the campaign as they carried their two-goal cushion into the intermission.

Action in the second stanza saw Joe Whittet strike early for the hosts to put them up by three at 1:08.

Coming right back, they added another less than a minute later on a Brett Shawana effort.

Not done there, Raf Praysner’s first goal as a member of the Voodoos added to the cushion before teammate Eric Mondoux made it 6-0 with half a game to play.

The Powassan power play contributed to the night’s tally courtesy of Martone late in the second.

A scoreless final frame finished off the Powassan victory

Voodoos’ netminder Luke Greenwood stopped all 18 shots he faced to record the win and post his third shutout of the season.

Wildcats’ starter Parker Simpson was peppered with 65 attempts in defeat.

The Wildcats next game is Sunday at the Chelmsford Arena when they play the Rayside-Balfour Canadians at 6:30 p.m.

The Wildcats next home games is on Friday, Dec. 20 when they play the Powassan Voodoos at 7:30 p.m.
